Tree worker hurt in struck-by

A worker on the ground was injured May 1, 2022, in Norton, Massachusetts, when he was struck by a piece of a tree being felled.

The 19-year-old man was standing by the tree as it was being cut down when he was hit by a chunk that fell from about 15 to 20 feet up.

The man was taken by ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass., then by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. His condition was not immediately known, according to a report in The Boston Globe.

Property owner killed felling tree

An 85-year-old man was killed May 11, 2022, while cutting down a tree on his property in Clifton, Colorado. Gale Miles, of Clifton, died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries, according to KKCO 11 News reports.

Climber killed in fall

A man died May 13, 2022, in Penn Yan, Yates County, New York, after falling 50 to 60 feet from a tree.

Ryan Rector, 27, of Naples, N.Y., was working on a tree-trimming job for his company, Hillside Logging and Tree Service, when the fall occurred. Rector was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Finger Lakes Daily News report.

Worker killed by cut tree

A tree worker was killed by a falling tree May 20, 2022, near Lake Hodges, California. The victim was part of a crew trimming or cutting down a tree when the tree, or a part of it, fell on him. The man died at the scene, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report.

Man killed cutting tree

A man was found dead May 25, 2022, on his property near Jersey Mills, Pennsylvania, apparently after being struck by a tree he’d cut down.

Joseph Shoemaker, 66, of Abbottstown, Pa., was discovered by a friend who was staying at Shoemaker’s cabin. The friend had arrived at the cabin late Tuesday night, May 24. The kitchen light was on, but the friend went to bed, believing Shoemaker had already retired to his room for the evening.

When the friend got up early Wednesday morning, he went looking for Shoemaker, since he was not in the cabin. Shoemaker was found trapped under the downed tree, and volunteer firefighters had to remove a giant log to free his body.

The last time anyone talked with Shoemaker was Sunday night, so investigators believe he died sometime Monday or Tuesday, according to a Williamsport Sun-Gazette report.

Tree worker killed in fall

A tree worker was killed after falling from a tree he was cutting May 31, 2022, in Pocatello, Idaho.

Darin Williams, 35, of Pocatello, was up in a tree using a chain saw to cut down branches. He was more than 15 feet off the ground when he fell onto the street below and suffered a serious head injury. He had been paid by the homeowner to cut down branches, according to police.

He was rushed via Pocatello Fire Department ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment, where he later died.

A GoFundMe account and a bank account were set up to help his wife and three children, according to an Idaho State Journal report.
