I was out in Oregon this summer training contract workers to fell and remove thousands of trees damaged by the many wildfires. We were constantly navigating through steep, rugged terrain. There were tons of downed trees, branches and debris that would grab at your running saw, which put kickback and pushback at the top of my mind.

Part of the training course was to make sure everyone understood how kickback happens, as well as all the usual stuff with chain-saw felling cuts and safe work positioning on the site. Another part of the training was about the personal protective equipment (PPE) everyone was expected to wear, including cut-resistant chain-saw pants. With kickback being such a prominent hazard in this rough landscape, I made certain everyone was trained on kickback prevention and the importance of wearing cut-resistant chain-saw pants.

These contract workers came from different parts of the U.S., and everyone had their favorite brand of cut-resistant pants. I found three guys, each of whom was wearing a different brand, so I thought I’d find out more about their brand choices.

First, we have the Clogger Zero Gen2. (Also see “Product Review: Clogger Ascend All-Season Chain-Saw Pants,” TCI Magazine, October 2020) These pants have a classy look – not too loud or busy. They are nice and lightweight – they actually don’t feel heavy at all. This light weight helps keep them cooler, helpful for wearing all day in the summer. Even though the material is lightweight, they have this strong, abrasion-resistant fabric covering from the knees down, and an extra strip down the right leg to protect against cuts from a chain saw hanging on a climbing arborist’s saddle.

Get the custom size if you want a more tailored fit. The guy in Photo 1 is pretty tall. He wears a medium, and the pants fit him really well. I’m shorter, and I wear a medium, too, but the legs on mine are a bit too long. Clogger says the extra leg length allows for better knee flex, especially when wearing climbing spurs. OK, I’ll give them that.

The next brand of cut-resistant pants we had on the job was the Husqvarna Technical Chainsaw Pant. They are a little heavier than the Clogger Zero, but they’re still pretty comfortable. A lot of cut-resistant pants can be really hot, especially in the summer. Even though these keep you warm on chilly mornings, they have zippered vents everywhere to keep you cool throughout the day – side vents, pocket vents, back-of-the-leg vents, lots of ways to move air through. The fabric is stretchy and strong. There is that extra Cordura fabric reinforcing the knees. All around, these are hardcore and breathable pants.

Another brand of chain-saw pants is SIP Protection’s Innovation Canopy W-Air for arborists. The first thing I noticed were all the vent and pocket zips. There are lots of pockets for storage. These cut-resistant pants are designed for loggers and tree workers, so you know they are tough. They’ve got heavy-duty Cordura fabric on the knees with an added layer of Teflon, which makes them water and dirt resistant. That is great because the knees on my pants always get the dirtiest and take the hardest hits. The Innovation pants also have the vent panels on the back of the leg for those hot summer days. I like that there is reflective material on those back leg panels as well as on the bottoms of the legs, which helps us see when a person is walking in low-light settings.

The Innovation W-Air pants have high-tech Dyneema chain-saw protection, which is compliant with a Class 1 level of protection from saw cuts.

If you’re not wearing chain-saw pants, go out and invest in a pair. There are plenty of additional brands out there, all with unique features, but the one thing they all have in common is the cut-resistant fabrics that will help protect you. Don’t play games with your PPE – be smart, be protected, be back at it tomorrow.
