Stepping Up: Advocacy That Makes a Difference
As many of you know, we recently returned from another successful Legislative Day on Capitol Hill. TCIA member-company leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., in September, not just to shake hands but to educate policymakers about the key issues that impact the tree care industry. It was a powerful reminder of how essential it is for us to remain engaged with those who write the laws and regulations that affect our businesses and livelihoods.
What we’re doing in D.C. isn’t just about one day or one meeting. It’s about building relationships and creating a foundation of understanding. I’ve spent a fair share of my career as a lobbyist and industry advocate. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that successful advocacy doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, patience and persistence. You may have a meeting where it feels like you’re getting through, and then months later, you realize that seed you planted is finally beginning to grow. That’s the nature of the work – long term, steady and committed.
And right now, as we have concluded another critical election season, it’s more important than ever to stay involved. Regardless the outcome of the election, the decisions made in Washington will have a profound impact on the regulatory landscape for our industry. One thing remains certain: we can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. Change will come, and it could come quickly.
That’s why I’m calling on the leaders at all TCIA member companies to take a more active role in advocacy. Whether it’s attending our next Legislative Day, connecting locally with your representatives or joining a coalition to push for policies that benefit tree care professionals, your voice matters. If you’ve never been involved in advocacy before, now is the time to start.
Let’s face it – there’s no single magic moment that makes our efforts successful. Advocacy is a marathon, not a sprint. But I can promise you this; your engagement today could be what tips the scales in our favor tomorrow.
Now is the time for us all to step up and commit to staying involved.
