TCI Magazine is now offering a new feature highlighting field-training summaries in English and Spanish languages! How cool is that?

The premiere feature in this issue is a full-page illustration on how to mitigate spring poles, or cutting wood under tension.

Cutting wood that is under pressure can be very dangerous. If the wood fibers on the tension side (outer bend) are released first, the branch or tree can release suddenly, causing a violent reaction and potential for severe injury.

Cuts must only be made on the compression side (inner bend) to better control the release.

To release a spring pole in control, make several shallow cuts at the point of greatest pressure into the branch on the compression side. Stand to the side of the expected movement, and do not cut too deeply to avoid pinching the bar.

At the first sign of movement on the limb, stop and retreat to allow the spring pole to release its stored force gradually. If more cutting is required, repeat the process.
